Breaking the Cycle: Supporting Women Through Menstrual Product Donations

Today, I had the privilege of dropping off a carload of menstrual products at a local shelter, as part of a drive aimed at supporting women who don’t have regular access to these essential items. It was a small act in the grand scheme of things, but one that carries weight, because period poverty is real, and it's often invisible.

For many of us, having pads or tampons on hand is second nature. But for thousands of women and people who menstruate, particularly those experiencing homelessness or economic hardship, access to these products is not guaranteed. That lack of access affects more than just physical health; it impacts dignity, school attendance, employment opportunities, and overall well-being.

When I learned about this drive, I knew I wanted to help. I reached out to friends and family, shared the initiative online, and started collecting donations. What happened next was inspiring: people gave generously. What started as a small idea turned into a trunk full of supplies, ready to make a real difference.

Arriving at the shelter today with these donations was humbling. The staff greeted me with warmth and gratitude, but the real impact will be felt by the women who, even just for a few months, won’t have to worry about how they’ll manage their periods.

This experience reminded me how crucial community is. Whether it's organizing a drive, donating, or simply spreading the word, we all have a role to play in breaking the stigma around menstruation and addressing period poverty head-on.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s keep showing up for each other.

If you're looking for a way to get involved, consider organizing a drive in your own neighborhood or supporting local shelters and organizations that are doing this vital work every day.
